- WorshipIdea: Praise Bands
____________________________________________________________

Have you ever wished you had a great praise band like one of
those megachurches?

Often smaller ministries think they never can compete
musically with the "big guys" and don't even try. While it's
true, you have a better chance of finding musicians if your
congregation has 10,000 in weekly attendance, a small church
does have a fighting chance if they do things correctly.

I've recently been to some of the most famous megachurches
in the country and I was a bit surprised at how
unspectacular they are. Sure, they were good, but I'd put
the praise band of the local church I used to play at up
against any of them.

All things being equal, I guess the main difference between
big and small ministries would be how deep they are for each
position - a megachurch might have 3 or 4 available bass
players and a smaller ministry would be blessed to have 1
[you know how hard it is to find bass players...]

So how do you attract musicians? It boils down to standards.
There are ministries that have standards and those that
don't - with players as well as vocalists.

I'm guessing that one reason [besides God's favor] that big
churches are big is that they do things correctly. The other
Sunday as I was enjoying one megachurch, I thought to myself
"I bet I'd >never< hear an off-pitch Aunt Sally sing on the
praise team here." So why is it an issue in your church?

Keep these musings in mind when you're creating and
maintaining your praise band:

1. A band is only as good as the weakest link. Any players
I've known who have spent years perfecting their craft won't
be caught dead with an amateur. Form a strong band with the
best players for your main service and create a "farm team"
of progressing musicians for other services - Sunday nights,
prayer meetings, youth events, etc. Those players may one
day gain enough skill to progress to the main band. Then
you'll have a spare bass player when one gets sick!

The "spiritually correct" don't like this thinking, and
would argue that they wouldn't want to cultivate the
mentality that Sunday morning is the "main stage." Why not
have your pro drummer play in the youth group so he doesn't
get a big head?

I disagree with this. Sunday morning is most definately the
"main stage" and I would want my best players in this
critical time slot. This is when visitors visit, so why
wouldn't you want to put your best foot forward? As far as
big heads go, I don't ever recall a true pro with a "big
head" but have met many amatuers with gigantic craniums (I
recently had the opportunity to work on Chris Sligh's major
label recording and was once again reminded how the top,
most talented musicians in the business are almost
ridiculously humble.)

2. You gotta groove. As much as possible, form a steady band
with the same players every week. A megachurch I know has
recently implemented a weird new rule - all musicians must
rotate among all their bands [they have several bands for
different ministries.] This sounds so cuddly, doesn't it -
everyone gets to spread his/her gifts around!

Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. When a band plays
together, week after week, an unspeakable bond is formed.
It's basically a small group. You start reading each other's
minds. The music gets so good you can hardly stand it. Not
to mention the spiritual bonds that are formed.

Would you want to be in a small group with different people
each week? I didn't think so.

3. A drummer is everything. In the olden days, the pianist
was in rhythmic control. Today, that control is handed to
the drummer. If he/she is off, everyone has a bad day. Only
use a reliable drummer who has steady time. I'd rather play
with a track than play with a tempo-challenged drummer. One
drummer I recall could keep perfect time in rehearsal.
Unfortunately he loved to be out very late on Saturday
nights, then would come in Sunday morning, half asleep, and
play like he was trapped in one of Star Trek's space-time
continuums.

Bottom Line: Make your praise band a safe place for talented
musicians and watch what happens.

>Can you believe HymnCharts.com is 6 years old? When I
started out in my first music director job 8 years ago (I
had always worked in a church as pianist or assistant to the
music director) I soon discovered one of my biggest
challenges was trying to mix a hymn into my praise sets.
