Prayers for Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is the hidden battle taking place in the spiritual realm between God’s kingdom and the forces of darkness. The Bible puts it plainly in Ephesians 6:12 (NIV): “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

This verse in essence tells us that our real enemy isn’t other people; it’s the devil and his spiritual forces. This may sound scary and indeed it is, but we can take heart since God equips His people to stand strong. He provides us with spiritual armor and authority to face any attack.

In this article, we’ll explore what spiritual warfare means and how prayer is a powerful weapon in the battle. You’ll find prayers for your:

  • personal protection
  • adult children
  • home and family
  • victory over the enemy
  • protection in your workplace or ministry.

By the end, you’ll be encouraged that through prayer and God’s power, you can overcome any spiritual attack that comes your way.

Understanding Spiritual Warfare

The devil uses various tactics to undermine our faith and draw us away from God’s plan. But how can you recognize a spiritual attack?

Now, while the following may seem like typical human emotional and psychological issues and conflicts, in fact, they are spiritual attacks.

⚠️ Intense discouragement or depression

⚠️ Overwhelming temptations

⚠️ Unusual division and conflict among believers

⚠️ Constant obstacles when you try to pray or read the Bible

⚠️ Sudden doubts about your faith

⚠️ Strife in your home for no clear reason.

Scripture and seasoned believers affirm these as common tactics of the enemy.

The good news is that as a Christian, you have authority in Christ to fight back. Jesus has already defeated Satan through the cross and resurrection, and He has given us authority “to overcome all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19).

This means we don’t have to be afraid of the devil’s schemes. The Bible urges us, “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7, NIV). Our part is to stay close to God (submit) and stand firm against the enemy (resist), trusting God to handle the rest.

Crucially, the believer’s authority comes from Jesus. We fight from a place of victory, not for victory. “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). In other words, God’s Spirit in you is far greater than any demonic power.

When you pray in Jesus’ name and stand on God’s Word, you are on solid ground. Remember, you are not powerless in this battle. Through Christ, you are “more than a conqueror” (Romans 8:37) and equipped to overcome every attack.

The Armor of God in Prayer

One of the key ways God equips us is by giving us the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18). This “armor” is a symbolic description of the spiritual tools God provides, which are truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer.

Just as a soldier wouldn’t go into battle without armor, we shouldn’t face each day’s spiritual battles without God’s protection.

Paul provides believers with a great self-defense strategy in Ephesians 6, and Jesus equips us with all six pieces of our spiritual armor. When we “put on” this armor, we are effectively clothing ourselves with Christ’s power and character, which the devil cannot defeat.

So how do we put on the armor of God? Through prayer. Each piece of armor can be prayed into your daily life:

🛡️ Belt of Truth – Pray for God to fill your heart and mind with His truth so lies won’t sway you.

Example: “Lord, ground me in Your truth today; don’t let me believe the enemy’s lies.”

🛡️ Breastplate of Righteousness – Ask God to guard your heart and help you live in a way that honors Him. Remember, your righteousness comes from Christ.

Example: “Lord, help me walk in Your righteousness and keep my heart pure.”

🛡️ Shoes of Peace – Pray for God’s peace to guide you and for readiness to share the gospel wherever you go.

Example: “Lord, steady me with Your peace and make me ready to bring Your good news.”

🛡️ Shield of Faith – Trust God to protect you from fear, doubt, and temptation.

Example: “Lord, increase my faith; I believe You are in control even when trials come.”

🛡️ Helmet of Salvation – Pray for a mind secured in the assurance of salvation, knowing you are God’s, loved, and safe in Him.

Example: “Lord, guard my thoughts with the truth that I am Yours and nothing can separate me from Your love.”

🛡️ Sword of the Spirit – Arm yourself with Scripture to push back against lies and attacks.

Example: Pray through a verse and declare it, standing on God’s Word as your defense.

Prayers for Spiritual Warfare

Prayer is one of the strongest ways to stand firm in the middle of spiritual battles. Here are areas you can cover in prayer:

🙏 Personal Protection – Ask God to guard your heart, mind, thoughts, and emotions. Pray that lies, fear, or discouragement will not take root and that His presence will surround you like a shield.

👨‍👩‍👧 Adult Children – Cover your grown children in prayer for guidance in their choices, protection from harmful influences, and strength to remain rooted in God’s truth as they face life’s challenges. Ask God to give them wisdom and discernment in their decisions so they can hear His voice and follow the right path.

🏡 Home and Family – Pray for unity, peace, and safety in your household. Ask God to break the grip of fear, drive out anything that doesn’t honor Him, and let His Spirit fill every room.

🕊️ Victory in Warfare – Declare Christ’s triumph over every scheme of the enemy. Pray with boldness, standing on the truth that Jesus has already won and that you walk in His authority.

💼 Workplace or Ministry – Ask God to guard you in the places where you work or serve. Pray for wisdom, integrity, and protection against attacks that try to disrupt your witness, your calling, or the influence He has given you.

Using Scripture in Spiritual Warfare

The Word of God (the Bible) is our most powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He responded to every temptation by quoting Scripture, and eventually the devil fled (see Matthew 4:1-11). We can do the same.

Praying Scripture out loud is like swinging the sword of the Spirit. It unleashes divine power because God’s Word carries authority. How can you use Scripture in your prayers?

First, identify verses that apply to your situation or that counter the lies you’re hearing. Then, incorporate those verses directly into your prayer or proclamation.

For example, if you’re feeling afraid or under spiritual attack, you might pray using Psalm 91. You could say:

Praying those exact words from Scripture is powerful and builds your faith as you do it.

It’s wise to memorize key warfare scriptures so you have them ready whenever needed. Verses like “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7) or “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19) can be quickly called to mind and prayed.

Even simply praying the name “Jesus” or saying “The Lord rebuke you, Satan!” (as in Jude 1:9) in a moment of attack has great power. The important thing is to let God’s Word saturate your heart. Then your prayers will naturally overflow with Scripture, and you’ll be well-armed for any battle.

Daily Spiritual Warfare Prayer Template

Consistency is key in spiritual warfare. It helps to have a daily prayer routine that covers your bases spiritually. Here’s a step-by-step template you can use each day, incorporating praise, confession, declaration, and intercession. Feel free to adapt the wording to fit your style and needs:

  1. Praise: Begin your prayer with worship and gratitude. Acknowledge who God is.
  2. Confession: Next, humble yourself and confess any sins or weaknesses. This is extremely important because unconfessed sin can be a foothold for the enemy (Ephesians 4:26-27).
  3. Declaration (Spiritual Armor & Authority): Now declare the truth of God’s protection and your authority in Christ. This is where you put on the armor.
  4. Intercession: After covering yourself, intercede for others and specific situations. These can be your loved ones, church and pastors, workplace etc.
  5. Closing & Thanksgiving: End your prayer by re-affirming trust in God and thanking Him. Thanksgiving is a faith booster. It shows you believe God is acting even before you see results. It’s like planting a flag of victory at the end of your prayer, which the enemy hates to see.

Encouragement for the Battle

If all this talk of warfare feels heavy, take heart: the outcome of the war has never been in doubt. Jesus has won and we fight under His banner.

Sometimes we just need a reminder not to fear. “Do not be afraid or discouraged… For the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15) – God spoke those words to His people facing a frightening enemy, and it’s still His message to us today.

You may be in a tough battle right now, but you are not fighting alone. The Lord of Hosts (Heaven’s armies) is with you, and “if God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Also, remember the importance of praise and worship in warfare. When you praise God, even through tears, you shift the atmosphere. There’s a story in the Bible where King Jehoshaphat sent worshipers out ahead of his army, singing praises, and it actually led to the enemy’s defeat without Israel even fighting (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).

Worship confuses the enemy and strengthens your spirit. Keep some worship music on hand or verses of praise to recite when you feel under attack; it’s like raising a victory flag that signals “God reigns here!”

Importantly, don’t isolate yourself. Support from your church community and prayer partners is a huge boost in battle. We all need comrades to lift us up. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to a trusted friend, pastor, or prayer group and ask them to pray with you. “Carry each other’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2) is a command for times like these.

In summary

Prayer is a powerful weapon and a lifeline for every believer engaged in spiritual warfare. Through prayer, we invite God’s protection, assert our authority in Christ, and push back the forces of darkness.

The enemy trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon their knees, because he knows the power of God can topple his plans in an instant. By praying regularly for ourselves, our loved ones, and our spheres of influence, we effectively stand on the front lines of the battle and claim the victory Jesus won for us.
